Whitbread Literary Award–winning novelist Jennifer Johnston’s story of two young Irish men, whose defiant friendship spans class and, later, rank at the onset of World War I
Born to an aristocratic family on an estate outside of Dublin, Alexander Moore feels the constraints of his position most acutely in his friendship with Jerry Crowe, a Catholic laborer in town. Jerry is one of the few bright spots in Alec’s otherwise troubled life. The boys bond over their love of swimming and horses, despite the admonitions of Alec’s cold and overbearing mother, who scolds her son for venturing outside of his class. When the Great War begins, he seizes the opportunity to escape his overbearing mother and taciturn father, and enlists in the British army. Jerry, too, enlists—not out of loyalty to Britain, but to prepare himself for the Republican cause. Stationed in Flanders, the young men are reunited and find that, while encamped in the trenches, their commonalities are what help them survive. Now a lieutenant and an officer, Alec and Jerry again find their friendship under assault, this time from the rigid Major Glendinning, whose unyielding adherence to rank leads the two men toward a harrowing impasse that will change their lives forever.

More than a short story, but shorter perhaps than a novel, this novella deals with two lads from the same Irish village one hundred years ago. One is the son of the manor house, born to privilege and expectations, while the other is poor, with litter education and fewer prospects. Both go off the same day to the Great War, one an officer, the other, a private, and it is questionable if both shall return.
Ms. Johnston write with the fine of a miniaturist, that the reader can "see" in fine detail their fated, intertwined lives.
She is probably not well known in the United States, and more's the pity. As I read and finished this work, I felt I was reading a work already a classic in its time.

How Many Miles to Babylon? A Novel edition by Jennifer Johnston Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A beautiful book written by a wordsmith. All the imagery was vivid. Highly recommended.
Great WW1 Story, well worth a read. Very thought provoking!
Great book!
Excellent
I love to find a book that captures all of me as I sit in the winter of my home in a comfortable chair and a fire to warm the room. With "How Many Miles to Babylon" I found such a treasure. I grew up in the land of Jerry and Alec at a time when freedom had not yet been born. I'm half way through this story of vivid imagery and magical verse. Jennifer Johnson deserves a Nobel Prize in Literature for every sentence she writes. And I read some more, join me!
Oh! What a surprisingly powerful novel! One of our Irish neighbors recommended it to me, saying of all the books he was forced to read for school, this was his very favorite one. And I must say, the book took me by surprise! Though truly more of a novella than novel, at only being a scant few pages over 150, it was beautifully written and so emotional! I just loved it! I do think, however, in order to truly appreciate it, you need to have some understanding of the historical and political context of the book's WWI setting. The style of the book even adds to that historical feel, because despite its 1980s publication, it definitely has the feel of a book written before WWII even. All in all, a surprisingly wonderful story and one that I am very glad that I read!
I bought this book for my dad, the Irishman and lover of World War I and II books. He said it was a great book and thought I would enjoy it too especially the first part of the book. Apparently, the part of the story that takes place during the war is hard to read, but so is any book about war depicting battlefields and death. He said he would share with my brothers and will leave for me in the guest bedroom on my next visit. My dad is an avid reader with high standards so if he likes a book, I know it's good.
