I bought this edition of the Kalevala specifically because I already started it with a library book by this translator. Kirby did an amazing job preserving the original meter as best as possible along with the meaning. The Kalevala is a wonderful poetic epic full of grace, heroism and, if you've read any other mythologies, a bit of the unexpected.However, this is getting three stars because the book and binding are disappointingly cheap. The cover is thinner than card stock and the pages are see-through. The pages are B&W photocopy and have not been cleaned up. It feels like a college student basement production. And one final note... it is neither aesthetic nor professional to post advertising in the front pages of any book. It should either be at the very back or left out completely because the books have already been purchased.

A little bit disappointed, the choice of language just doesn't flow like it could. Keen to keep reading but will probably find a different translation.
This is a classic Finnish saga, beautifully translated in authentic style and meter.
Highly recommend to any interested in Finnish culture and/or the fantasy epic genre.
This is a primitive text that inspired the rhyme of William Wadsworth Longfellow as well as J.R.R. Tolkien. This is an essential reference for scholarly readers because the meter of the poetry carries through to other works and is especially natural sounding in Scandinavian languages.
It is great! The companion volume came the next day too. I have earmarked both books to begin reading when I finish reading Conan of Cimmeria. These are rare volumes indeed. Finnish mythology is overloked by most readers even in Finland.
Well, when I "bought" this book, I had heard a little about what is Kalevala and nothing in detail. Real shock came when I started to read this book. I actually never had any idea of how deep Finnish Folklore and Mythology is rooted. I am not a Finn by birth, so language WAS a big hurdle in getting introduced to Kalevala. This book, I am really impressed by its simple yet comprehensive narrative makes everything so clear by just giving a brief introduction to each character.
Book starts with introduction to people living in present day Finland. It explains about culture and folklore and how it was gathered into a book form. I have not yet enough time to read this book completely but as far as I have read, this book mesmerizes me with its narrative. For my first , I got this book for ZERO dollars, which is a huge benefit.
If you want to get introduced to Finnish people, Finnish culture, Finnish folklore, Finnish mythology, I would love to recommend this book. Only problem which is not so big, is that Ö, Ä, Å, ö, ä and å are not visible. Each of these characters is replaced by O, A, A, o, a, a respectively. But if you are not familiar with Finnish language, you will probably notice nothing wrong -)
Hands up to and to make it freely available.
The Finnish epic is a masterpiece. While the poetic verse may be a bit difficult getting used to for those more familiar with prose, you will be rewarded for sticking with it. The rhythm of the text is nothing short of musical. Seriously, I've found myself "singing" aloud while I read it. This may be one of the books that is easier read aloud than quietly. So why four stars and not five? Honestly, there's a better version out there for Better in the sense that it has the two volumes together.
Disregarding price (both versions are free), the edition marked "Kalevala the Epic Poem of Finland Complete" was the more convenient choice.
The Kalevala (volume I) tells of the heroic exploits of Vainomoinen ("aged and steadfast") , Ilmarinen (the Smith who builds the Sampo, a protective relic), and Lemminkainen ("the lively", but reckless). Many of their deeds are aimed at courtship, sometimes with tragic results as in the case of Vainamoinen's loss of Aino (she drowns, and never comes back to him). I thought I might be bored by it, but the tales can be surprising engaging, sometimes graphic, and filled also with rivalries, animosities, and also feasting and triumph. Ultimately Ilmarinen is successful in wooing a bride, but Vainamoinen bears him no grudge and sings him great praise. The main characters use spells and magic, and sometimes invoke the God Ukko in their quests. Overall an interesting, sometimes vivid and curious tale, in its first part. [Note on the text This is a word for word rendition of 1936 reprint and translation of W.F. Kirby, which I verified at my local library.]
