Four Friends Robyn Carr 9780778316817 Books
I love Robyn Carr - her series books and her stand-alone tales. "Four Friends" reminds me of my favorite Carr book, her first one The House on Olive Street. Strong, engaging women with lots of drama in their lives tell us each of their individual stories.Carr always makes me feel like I want to be in the middle of her books, making friends with her characters. She does people so well, allowing the reader to see all their quirks, good and bad. Well developed characters with totally believable dialogue make up the cast of this latest bestseller (as I'm sure this is going to be).
I loved all four of the protagonists in this story but especially sympathized with Gerry, finding out that the person she trusts most in the world - her husband - wandered a few years back. It definitely had me questioning what I would have done in similar circumstances.
This would make an excellent reader's group selection and has "Questions for Discussion" at the back of the book.

Four Friends Robyn Carr 9780778316817 Books Reviews
I've read innumerable books by Robyn Carr, but Four Friends is definitely one of my favorites. I must admit to being a Virgin River groupie, but I found Four Friends to be one of the most complex and moving novels so far. The characters were real, flawed, but so wonderful you'd want them for your best friends. A number of reviewers were critical of the number of "crisis" occurring in the book, but the reality is that if we actually knew what was going on behind closed doors in our own neighborhoods, we would probably be surprised.
As always, Robyn Carr's writing is superb, the characters are portrayed as real but like able, and I was sorry to see the story end.
Three friends in the upscale Mill Valley, CA area each begin having problems in their marriages and lives. Gerri inadvertently learns her husband of 25 years had an affair 5 years ago. Phil and Gerri have a lot to work to do before they can get back together. While they struggle to reconcile, they also have to deal with their children who are acting out during their parents' problems.
Andy throws out her cheating younger husband and discovers love in a most unusual place with Bob, who is remodeling her kitchen. She also has to deal with finding out her son is gay.
Sonja is floating through life thinking she can keep all that is bad away from those she cares about with meditation, feng shui, healthy eating, and herbs. When her husband of 10 years decides he has had enough of her "woo woo" he tells her he is leaving. Sonja has a psychotic break and winds up in a treatment center.
BJ is new to the neighborhood and remains srandoffish due to her background. She soon learns that the three friends are great caring people and becomes friends with them. She and her children are victims of domestic abuse, and the house they live in is like a half way house.
The story of these four women is one of learning about themselves and each other. This is a wonderful story of friends who support each other.
In Puerto Rico, when someone is superlatively good in something, we call them a monster in what they do. Well, Robyn Carr is a monster in writing women's fiction. This book was just sublime! Four women, neighbors in an upper crust neighboorhood, have varying marital problems. Three of them walk every morning and have been friends for some time. Their husbands have been together socially because their friendship is that close. It all starts when one of the friends goes through a spectacular end to her marriage. It includes clothes, electronics and computer thrown on the front lawn and a screaming match. It seems like a virus because the other two start having problems, all with differing intensities and causes. The fourth friend is newly arrived, a little standoffish and likes to run instead of walking. However, when a situation arises, she's the one who stands up and points to the truth. This book has such a richness of details and situations that it would be impossible to catalog. There's marital abuse, infidelity, psychotic breakdowns, dfficult kids and a kid who comes out of the closet. However, even though at times it makes you cry, the story is enthralling and positive, because it involves how the human spirit will rise up after a catastrophic event, with the help of devoted friends. To me, the book is about frienship, and mostly, the special bonds that woman share. It was uplifting and very educational.
Robyn Carr never disappoints.. Is there a sequel to this? When it ended, I thought there were several things that I would like to have seen brought to a conclusion. Perhaps her next book will address some of those concerns.
All in all, a great read and I couldn't put the book down once I started it.
