This light, fun reading at its best. Well written, centering around the trials and adventures of an ethical, smart and likable heroine and her snarky ghost friend. Add mystery, the requisite light romantic interest (hate romance but this was tolerable and nothing overtly sexual) and just the right amount of humor combined with a bit of the dark side that transports the reader on a ghostly adventure and murder mystery. There was no cheesy dialogue or situations that makes you want to gag. Ms. Fox provides a very enjoyable, light read and I fully intend to indulge in more of her work.Tags : Amazon.com: Southern Spirits (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 1) eBook: Angie Fox: Kindle Store, ebook,Angie Fox,Southern Spirits (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 1),Moose Island Books,Fiction Mystery & Detective Cozy,Fiction Mystery & Detective Women Sleuths
Southern Spirits Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 1 eBook Angie Fox Reviews
"You want to help?" I asked, making sure I reached clear of Lucy as I dumped the contents of the vase over Grandma's rosebushes. She gave the little pile a sniff and sneezed. "You said it." The dirt was loose and dry, which I was glad to see. I'd heard that sort of things was good for the roots. It certainly couldn't hurt. When the last of the fine dust had settled out of the air, I hosed out the vase and poured the water on the roses.
After clipping a rose from the bush, putting it in the vase and adding water, Verity returned to the home she had inherited from her grandmother. What happened next takes her on a journey that could only traveled by a strong minded southern girl, which she was.
Verity had been engaged to one of the most eligible, prominent members of her hometown Sugarland, Tennessee. The wedding was planned and she was ready to go through it living happily ever after. What she learned the day before the actual wedding put a stop on the event and ended up costing her everything she owned. She had already sold off everything within her grandmother's house, except the dented vase that no one seemed to want. Unless she found a way to come up with another $20,000 she would also be selling the house which was breaking her heart.
This book is so full of humor! I'll give you just one hint of what you're in store for when reading Southern Spirits - Lucy is a skunk! She's had her glands removed so she's safe but so cute you would think her to be a dog or cat. The problems and events that take place after Verity poured the dirt on the roses leads to even more humor. Yes, there are ghosts, murder and attempted murder, bringing it all together to make this one of my favorite books.
A lead character with a great sense of humor, a 1920s gangster ghost, and a pet skunk are the stars of this story. Add southern charm, a haunting mystery, and a whole lot of crazy antics, and you have this fabulously fun read.
The author handles setting exceptionally well, giving us the feel of a small southern town where everyone tends to know a little too much about your business. Verity gives the townspeople lots of fodder for gossip, which she handles with a mix of indignant defiance and embarrassment. I immediately sympathized with her. I also immediately liked her. But, really, how can you not like a women who has a pet skunk and talks to ghosts?
All of the characters come alive on these pages. The plot is well paced, with the mystery unfolding a little at a time, keeping me interested and thoroughly entertained.
Southern Spirits is a fantastic start to a series, and the perfect book for some lighthearted fun.
I liked this book very much and am surprised at the complaints about the editing. True, I found myself kind of confused over some of the syntax at times but not like I couldn't figure it out. Grammar-wise it's almost perfect except for a couple of things; one being on my list of top grammar mistakes--"revert back". Always makes me grind my teeth. Back never follows any word that starts with "re" because the back is already implied. I think there was one other small thing but considering the quality of writing out there these days, it's practically perfection. It's simply a fun ghost story. People get so carried away with the power of being "reviewers", half the time they miss the point. A story about someone who talks to ghosts is not going to stand up to close scrutiny on any level. I'm a stickler on grammar and bad writing but the story is a different thing. You don't have to like a story but it's the writer's prerogative to write it as he/she sees fit. Might not be the way you or I would write it but doesn't make it a bad thing. This is a well-written, funny, just a little wacky mystery/romance without a lot of boring, tedious sex and a minimum of swearing (for those who have those issues). I would absolutely read another one.
