Upon waking, Willow recalls only fleeting memories of dead butterflies, hollow eyes and discordant whispers. But slowly these phantasms begin to bleed into her daily life, making Willow question her own sanity. She soon realizes that the solution lies solely within the decrepit walls of Ashwood. As the boundary between dreams and reality disintegrates, Willow finds the courage to defeat the leader of the Mora before he traps her soul in the nightmare forever.

The above is the synopsis of the book and it details exactly what happens, which is why I don't read them. The opening pages talks about the four main characters, which for me was a bit overwhelming becuase I hadn't gotten to know and learn about the characters, but rather I had to figure out who was who and what was going on. But other than that, the storyline progressed along at a nice pace. The writing was good and flowed smoothingly.

The mark of a good book, is when it stays with you long after you've red it. This is a book that certainly did that for me. Willow's adventures/misadventures in Ashwood were both thrilling and terrifying, to say the least. How a day can go so wrong, going from a simple photo shoot, to what transpired afterward, was mind-blowing. The author used such vivid imagery that my dreams were filled with grotesquely tall nurses and deformed, black-eyed friends. An excellent read all round, and an author to keep watching.
While I'm not the target market for this book, there were plenty of moments that had me on the edge of my seat. As I'm sure was intended, after finishing the book I found myself questioning the things I experienced in my every day life, wondering if it was actually happening or if I had just dreamt that I'd woken up that morning and was actually still asleep.

The main character was complex and relatable, and felt incredibly human. I could see the average teenager relating to her quite a bit, and there was enough that was unique about her that made her interesting and endearing, instead of the cardboard-cutout teens we see in a lot of YA protagonists. Some of the supporting characters seemed like they needed a bit more complexity, but in general I felt like the interactions were believable and relatable on all fronts. The use of Jungian theory and Slavic folklore gave it a complexity and an edge that is often lacking in YA works, and I could easily see this book sparking the interests of a future psychologist.
Not the genre I usually read, but saw some posts about it. It kept me engaged enough that at times I would keep reading instead of doing what I needed to get done! Some of the descriptive elements I found cringe worthy not because it was scary, but because I could envision what the author was writing. I am totally looking forward to the next book!

I can't wait for the next one! A unique story about a unique teen who is comfortable and ok with being a bit different. And the story is a bit different, a bit scary and creepy but in a thoughtful non blood and guts way that has you pondering what you've read several hours and days later. I liked the positive relationships with family and friends and I love the cover art too!
Ashwood is a great read and one you should definitely pick up. The horror in the story is subtle, not the kind to make you jump and scream but rather the kind you find yourself mulling over hours, days, and even a week after you've put the book down or gotten past the part. CJ Malarsky has written a fun story with good characters. There are twists, a lot of twists. Some you will expect. Others you will not. The ones you don't come often enough that you're never sure about the ones you do, and after things get going you'll go through the rest of the book - and perhaps your day - wondering what is real and what is a dream.
I believe this is Malarsky's first book -it definitely has some of those elements, given the first-person narration, which is really the only thing that hurts it. The plot definitely feels like a horror game, I wonder if Malarsky has ever played Silent Hill?

The protagonist is a teenage girl, but there are many elements in this book that remind me of my awkward boyhood -frustration, feeling misunderstood (everything's a matter of life and death when you're 16 -imagine if you were actually right!) and all the hobbies. The little trip that begins all the protagonist's troubles was the sort of thing I did at that age. The passage of time is disorienting, and that is a very good thing -you feel the anxiety of the protagonist as she gets whipped back and forth from the waking world to her nightmares.

I am excited to see what Malarsky will publish next!
